Caring for God’s creation is an important part of our life and calling as a Benefice. Across our churches, there are many ways to take part, through prayer and reflection, joining a group or getting involved in practical environmental action.
Eco Church Awards
Eco Church is an A Rocha UK scheme that helps churches care for God’s earth through worship and teaching, buildings, land, community and lifestyles. St Mary’s and St John, Hailey have silver awards and Holy Trinity a bronze award
Eco Churchyards
As part of our Eco Church work, St Mary’s and St John have created a wildlife haven for wildflowers, butterflies and other insects in part of the churchyard. This area is cut only twice a year, in early spring and autumn.
Events
- Vigil for the Earth Monthly Evening Prayer Meeting: St Mary’s hosts a quiet hour of prayer for the earth, held on the third Thursday of every month, 6.00–7.00pm at St Mary’s Church, Witney. Come and go as you please at any time during the hour.
- We host the Witney Eco Forum, which offers talks and film screenings on environmental issues and practical ways to care for creation. Events are open to all.
- A series of sermons during Creationtide each September, culminating in a Harvest Thanksgiving service
- An annual blessing of the River Windrush
